What’s next?

Matt Griffin

I’ve spent the last 9 years at Shopify, leading design and UX for some of the most important products in commerce, including Shop Pay, Shop Cash, Shopify Payments, Shopify Capital, Shopify Balance, Shopify Shipping, and many more.

Now I’m looking for the team I’ll build with next. Here’s what I’m looking for:

Great people with real creative chemistry.

I’ve chased the same feeling throughout my adult life, from playing in indie rock bands in my 20s, to running my own design agency in my 30s, to Shopify. Smart, talented, energetic people who challenge each other, make each other’s work better, and get into a creative groove together.

Teams like that can move mountains and have a blast doing it.

Something with enormous potential.

I’m looking for somewhere I can invest the next 4 to 6 years, as part of a core team building a company with the potential to become substantially more important.

I want the decisions we make to change the product, the product to change the trajectory of the business, and the people who took that journey together to participate meaningfully in the outcome.

A world class design team to build.

I’m looking for a Head of Design role where I can build the kind of team I believe in: exceptional people, a high craft bar, trust, candour, ambitious problems, and real product influence.

The best work happens when smart people bring different perspectives to the same problem and build on each other’s thinking. I want design, product, and engineering working as one team, with different skills but shared ownership. Good ideas can come from anywhere.

More build, less bullshit.

I like hard problems, strong opinions, healthy disagreement, and high expectations. I want most of our energy going where it’s most valuable: building the product, the company, and the team.

A few practical things.

I’m based in Ottawa for approximately the next two years. I can travel regularly, particularly every other week, and will have considerably more geographic flexibility after that.

I’m not in a hurry. Finding the right team matters much more to me than finding the next job quickly.

If this sounds like the company you’re building, let’s talk.
